Beatles, The British rock music group that revolutionized popular music around the world in the 60's by leading a movement in rock n' roll music known as the British Invasion. From 1964 through 1969, the Beatles achieved unprecedented popularity with songs often reaching the Billboard top-ten popular music charts.

In 1959, the Beatles were formed of four musicians who born in Liverpool, England: George Harrison (guitarist), John Lennon (guitarist), Paul McCartney (bassist), and Peter Best (drumer). Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey) soon replaced Best in 1962.
Influenced by American rock n' roll artists of the late 50's, such as Little Richard and some others, the Beatles styled their songs in the sophisticated manner of Tin Pan Alley, an American tradition of popular music song writing that peaked in the 20's and 30's. From the simple, fresh style of their early songs, like "I want to hold your hand" (1963) and "A hard day's night" (1964), the Beatles progressed to innovative, experimental works-culminating in the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). Considered the first concept album because the songs unified by common theme, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was also admired for its haunting harmony and lyrics, unconventional musical phrases and rhythms, and the integrated use of electronic music and the Indian sitar.
In 1970, the Beatles split up after the release of Let It Be album. Each member pursued another musical career. Regardless individual successes, members were often approached with requests to reunite, until John Lennon's tragic murder in 1980. The group won the Grammy Trustees Award in 1972 and in 1988, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even the Beatles are no longer together and will never be together because Lennon's tragic dead. Many of us are still considering the Beatles "the best group in music history." Their music is appreciated by young and old, from generation to generation.
